Congratulations to all of the students who received awards and certificates. Don't forget Semester 1 reports were emailed home, consider your teachers' comments carefully and look closely at areas that need improvement for Semester 2.
Our Principal, Mr Bullied is currently taking some well-deserved long service leave. Whilst Mr Bullied is on leave in term 3 we will be welcoming an Acting Principal to Bridgetown High School, Ms Garcia.
Ms Garcia is currently a Deputy Principal at Albany SHS, we call on the school community to make Ms Garcia feel very welcome and assist her as she immerses herself in our school culture.
I would like to wish all staff and students a very happy and safe holiday. I hope you thoroughly enjoy your well-earned break and use it to prepare for what promises to be a very busy Term 3.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.
To celebrate NAIDOC week and in conjunction with the Healing Foundation (which aims to support Stolen Generation survivors, families and communities), Peter and Francis Jetta recently visited Bridgetown High School Year 10 students. Peter conducted a traditional Welcome to Country and then explained the meaning of what he said. Peter described his life since being taken away from his family at the age of five. Peter was one of 8 children in his family that were forcibly removed and made a Ward of the State. One of his sisters, who was also taken from their parents was just 6 months old. Peter and Francis talked about how hard work, love and support have helped their children grow into strong adults, including the success of their son Lewis Jetta who plays for the West Coast Eagles.
The year ten students shared casual conversations and sausage rolls (which they had previously prepared in anticipation for their visit) with the Jetta’s. Peter and Francis are happy to return to Bridgetown to continue building positive relations between all Australians.
St John's Bridgetown investing in our students for the benefit of our community.
Given that in 90% of emergencies, the bystander is usually the first on scene - not a qualified medical practitioner - it makes sense to provide our Year 10 students with the opportunity of completing their Providing First Aid certificate. The aim of the course is to teach our students basic first aid training which will hopefully give them the confidence to act with purpose in the event of an emergency.
Normally, companies send their employees to a one day first aid course at a cost of nearly $170 per person. The St John's Bridgetown sub-centre have very generously agreed to fully fund every Year 10 student who wishes to complete the course - and will continue to do so in the years to come. We see it as a wise investment in the future of our youth and the health of our community. It will be incredibly beneficial to our community to have a further 30 or 40 qualified first aiders out there amongst us all.
Upon successful completion of the Providing First Aid course, the qualification is valid for two years and will prove to be a valuable addition to every Year 10 student's CV or resume.
Some of the good work done this term has come from suggestions that were placed in the 'suggestion box' - located at the entrance to the Library. The student forum is currently discussing an end of year Reward Day for students who always do the right thing, we have implemented a Study Period for Year 9 & 10 students as part of their option selections for Term 3 and we are investigating the interest shown in participating in interschool carnivals and cross country.
After holding four Cake & Slice stalls and three Free Dress Days in Semester 1, our school has raised an impressive $1252.40 for our focus charity - the Alannah and Madeleine Foundation. So, every time there is something yummy to buy or an opportunity NOT to wear school uniform for a day, student donations are going to this worthwhile foundation who, for more thant 22 years, have been dedicated to protecting children from violence and its devastating impact. They care for children who have experienced or witnessed serious violence; help to reduce the incidence of bullying, cyber bullying and other cyber risks; and, advocate for the safety and wellbeing of children.

Afternoon tea for NAIDOC Week
The first week of school holidays is to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Year 10 students were preparing for a morning tea by making sausage rolls. More info on NAIDOC week plans will follow early in term 3.
Traditional and quick recipes...
...were our focus for the last week of term. Year 8 students made a warm minestrone soup and Year 9/10's made golden syrup apple dumplings which were enjoyed with icecream and made with apples grown in our school sustainability garden.
All students can make some of these recipes over the holidays as they have their cooking booklets to take home. Year 9/10 students also have access to their recipes on Connect.
Supporting family conversations!
Meena’s mum has noticed that Meena has been very quiet lately and is not wanting to spend time with her friends from school over the weekend. When her mum asks what’s wrong, Meena bursts into tears and says that some of the kids from school have been making really nasty comments about her online. She shows her mum her Instagram account.
