Term 1 Certificate of Endeavour Awards
Due to Covid-19 Restrictions, we were unfortunately unable to hold our usual whole-school assembly at the end of term. Therefore, separate year group assemblies were held on Thursday 7th April to recognise our Certificate of Endeavour recipients. The Certificates of Endeavour are awarded to one student in every class who has demonstrated consistent effort, improvement and a willingness to try. Congratulations to the following students – your teachers have recognised you because you have been working so well throughout the term. Well done!
From the Principal, Carol Thorsby
“What will happen when the school receives notification of a positive case?” This is a question that many of you may have in your minds. Given the complexity of such a scenario, the short answer is that there is no “blueprint”. Actions taken are very dependent on the situation but will be made in consultation with the Department of Education COVID Team in Perth. What I can assure you is that the Department of Education is committed to keeping schools open and has a strong and unwavering focus on educating students where possible - face to face. I fear it will be “when” rather than “if” we have a positive case and when this happens, the staff and I will do what is needed to manage the situation and keep you informed as quickly as possible. As always, we will do our best and I know we can expect strong support from our school community.
I have published a list of staff emails with this newsletter. In Week 1 of term, we held an information session for parents on using our online learning platform, Connect. One of the outcomes from the meeting was that parents asked for a list of staff emails so that staff could be contacted individually to assist with subject specific queries. You are welcome to do this, but please remember that staff may not have the opportunity or the time to respond immediately and may have a number of queries, so your patience is requested to allow staff to respond as soon as they can. Please endeavour to have a look at Connect and make yourself familiar with it. If you require assistance, please let us know.
Mrs Loton and Mrs Hardey has asked me to let you know that an Interim Report will be completed by the end of Week 5 for every student and emailed home at the beginning of Week 6. The report is designed to provide a general overview of how your child has settled into the school year. If teachers request an interview, please note these should take place over the phone rather than face –to-face, or, better still, establish email contact with your child’s teachers.
School fees, charges and voluntary contributions will be sent home shortly. Last year, we had a huge increase in the number of families that paid these fees and I can assure you, it really does make a difference in what we are able to offer students. Remember that payment plans can be arranged and Camille Sinagra, our Manager of Corporate Services, is happy and willing to discuss these with you. Feel free to give her a call on 9761 0103.
Did you know a Homework Club is available for your student? Thanks to the generous efforts of Mrs Humby and Ms Cave, students are offered the opportunity to remain after school until 4.05pm to every Thursday receive help with homework. Ms Cave can assist with Maths and Science, and Mrs Humby with English and HaSS. The Club is open to all year groups. A huge thank you to these staff for offering their time so generously.
Until next time,
Mrs C. A Thorsby
Principal
2022 kicked off in Weeks 3 & 4 with a focus on Care for our School Environment. This is linked to Treat Property with Care and Consider Others (Responsibility & Respect).
This is the procedure we are teaching our students.
At BHS, students who are observed demonstrating expected behaviours are rewarded with 'House Points'. These students go into the draw to win weekly prizes. Congratulations to last week's recipients: Flynn Pitts, Seth McPhee and Jack Pratt.
From the Attendance Officer, Mrs Prout
Welcome to the new school year. It’s great to see everyone! As 2022 begins I would like to remind you of the importance of attending school EVERY DAY!
By attending school every day, you are giving yourself the best opportunity to achieve your goals.
Every MINUTE counts also!
Did you know that if you are just 10 minutes late each day that this equates to 50 minutes per week, nearly 1.5 weeks per year and by the time you leave school after 13 years, you have missed nearly half a year of school! WOW!
So, make sure you come to school every day and if you are sick, remember to ring or SMS the school!
BE RESPONSIBLE and come to school every day.
Mrs Prout
All Year 7s and Year 9 students are required to complete a series of NAPLAN tests in Literacy and Numeracy. NAPLAN assesses the skills students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national standards and over time. It is the only national assessment all Australian students do.
The testing window opens on Tuesday 10th May (Term 2, Week 3) and closes on Friday 20th May, 2022 (Term 2, Week 4). All Year 7 and Year 9 students will complete NAPLAN online this year. A Coordinated Practice Test (CPT) is scheduled to take place on THURSDAY 24th MARCH, 2022.
NAPLAN – Information for Parents and Carers will be mailed home shortly. Please take the time to read the information and if you have any further queries, please contact the NAPLAN Coordinator – Mrs Jo Loton.
Ms Cullen's Year 7 HaSS class enjoyed their own archaeological dig.
They spotted an exposed artefact, roped off the site, measured a grid over their dig site and then unearthed their finds.
We learnt about the specialised tools and process of digging that archaeologists use. We learnt about how they document and photograph their finds. We also learnt that they would not clamber on the excavation site quite like we did. We had a lot of fun learning about how a dig is set up and how archaeologists unearth artefacts to help build a picture of the past.
In this case we found many trinkets from the not-so-distant past.
Please be advised that a Fees & Charges statement will be sent home next week.
Some families may be eligible for assistance in meeting the cost of fees and uniforms. Please see details below.
