From the Acting Principal, Rebecca Hardey
With the end of the term now upon us, it’s time to reflect on what has been a fairly challenging start to 2022.
As always, our staff have gone above and beyond what can be expected of them in an ever-changing, unpredictable and, at times, highly stressful climate. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to formally thank the staff of Bridgetown High School most sincerely for their positivity, tenacity and steadfast commitment to making every day as “normal” as possible for our students…because, at the heart of it, that is why we are all here; to provide the best opportunities for our students to succeed that we can. I know without a doubt that the care and commitment shown by our staff – both teaching and non-teaching – is the reason why this school is such a wonderful place to be.
On the subject of our students, they are also to be commended on the way that they have conducted themselves this term. They have managed to navigate the challenges of compulsory mask wearing and physical distancing and have still managed to turn up every day with enthusiasm and commitment to their studies.
Speaking of commitment to studies, parents and carers will have received Progress Reports in the second half of this term, to give an indication of student progress thus far. I urge you all to take the time to consider the feedback of your child’s teachers and, especially, to take note of whether or not teachers have requested an interview. If they have, it is because there may be specific goals to be discussed or specific areas identified for improvement. Teachers definitely do not take ticking the interview box lightly – be assured that there would be a very good reason, so please take the time to make contact with your child’s teacher/s to have a discussion.
It hasn’t all been about hard work this term though – we have also thoroughly enjoyed continuing on with our PBS (Positive Behaviour Support) Program this term…this has gained some more traction since it was first implemented last year and it’s fantastic to see students receiving PBS and House Points regularly for demonstrating our four School Values of Kindness, Resilience, Responsibility and Respect. On Friday 1st April we held our first PBS Rewards Day for this year, with Form classes undertaking the BHS “Amazing Race” and enjoying a day off from their regular studies. The Student Forum and their able helpers also held a car wash on the day, raising a very respectful $285.00 for the recent flood victims in the Eastern States. All staff and students had a great time and I am sure that we are all looking forward to what the fabulous and hard-working PBS Committee has in store for us next term.
We also celebrated the “Bridgy Baldies” in the last week of this term, with some beautiful souls taking the big step to shave their heads and raise funds for The World’s Greatest Shave. For the second year in a row, BHS students have demonstrated their enthusiasm and willingness to commit to a very important and worthwhile cause, raising an awesome $2,560.00 and getting an updated look just in time for the holidays. Well done, and congratulations to you all. We are very, very proud of you!
Now that holidays are upon us, it is time to say a very sad farewell to a couple of our teaching staff. Miss Cicchini and Miss McDonald, who have been working with us since the start of 2021 in Health and Physical Education, have made the decision to move on from BHS and embark on new adventures. Miss Cicchini has decided to do some overseas travel now that restrictions have eased (yes, we are all jealous) and Miss McDonald is moving back the metro area to be closer to family and take a new teaching position in Mandurah (congratulations!). I would like to thank these ladies most sincerely for what they have brought to BHS – their energy, enthusiasm and fresh ideas have really had a positive impact and I know that the students – and staff – are really sad to see them go. All the best girls; we have loved having you here and I wish you both the very best of luck for your futures.
Ms Maley, who has been teaching full time English this term, is also making a change. Although not leaving us completely, she is stepping out of Room 7 and into Room 14, taking on the Year 7 Kolbang Program on a Wednesday for Mrs Prout, who is on LSL for the duration of Term 2. Ms Maley has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to her role in teaching English and will definitely be sorely missed. However, we are very glad that she will be remaining with us in another capacity and I know that the Kolbang students are looking forward to working with her.
Finally, I would like to wish Mrs Thorsby well for her daughter’s wedding, which is taking place on the first weekend of the school holidays. I know that she has been spending her LSL busily getting everything in order for the big day and has had a wonderful couple of weeks spending this very special time with her family. I hope that the day is extra special for you Mrs Thorsby and that you enjoy every moment.
So now, to holidays. I wish all of our returning staff and students a restful and, hopefully, illness free break. Let’s start Term Two refreshed, positive and energised for whatever life throws at us and continue to work towards making Bridgetown High School the best that it can be.
Take care everyone.

Term 1 Certificate of Endeavour Awards
Due to Covid-19 Restrictions, we were unfortunately unable to hold our usual whole-school assembly at the end of term. Therefore, separate year group assemblies were held on Thursday 7th April to recognise our Certificate of Endeavour recipients. The Certificates of Endeavour are awarded to one student in every class who has demonstrated consistent effort, improvement and a willingness to try. Congratulations to the following students – your teachers have recognised you because you have been working so well throughout the term. Well done!
Students in Year 9/10 Food Specialisations have been learning about batters, pastries and foods that are found at celebrations around the world.
Students in Year 8 Home Economics have been practicing their food preparation and presentation skills with smoothies, vegetable shaping, pinwheels and home made icy poles.
Year 7 Home Economics students are currently making their aprons and the last two weeks of this term will be cooking lessons (wearing their own aprons).
