As I write this article I am looking back at our “Do It For Dolly Day” at BHS. It is such a worthy cause and it was wonderful to see our staff and students engaging with the key messages of the day. The most important message behind “Do It for Dolly” is KINDNESS. Kindness is also one of the four PBS behaviour expectations at Bridgetown High School. This means that we want staff and students to reflect and be kind to each other, each and everyday and not just one special day a year. Sadly, bullying happens in most schools and Bridgetown High School is no exception. It is really important that students and parents report bullying to the school admin team. Unless we know about it, it is very hard for us to do anything to support. Day’s such as “Do It for Dolly” continue to make sure that the messages of being kind and that bullying is not OK in our school community.
I would like to welcome Ms Sara Ilbery to our staff. Ms Ilbery will be replacing Mrs Prout as the Learning Support Coordinator for the rest of this term whilst Mrs Prout is off on leave. Ms Ilbery brings a wealth of knowledge to the position as a former HaSS teacher and Teacher of the Deaf. We look forward to having Ms Ilbery on staff.
Students and staff that are involved in the Darwin Tour are very much looking forward to this event. The group leave on 29th May and return on Saturday 3rd June and will be visiting a number of Northern Territory attractions including Crocodylus Park; Litchfield National Park; the RDFS Museum; Darwin Aqua Park and Waterfront Precinct; Leanyer Water Park; Territory Wildlife Park and Mindl Beach Markets. We have been very fortunate to secure a talk from a Traditional Owner of the Litchfield Park area which has been supported by the Batchelor Institute, a regional tertiary education facility on the outskirts of the park. There are many great opportunities on this tour and I am looking forward to the enjoyment, the learning and the experiences that will take place. A big thank you to Mrs Loton, who is so wonderfully equipped to be our first aide expert on the trip, Mrs Holdworth who is coming to be my hardworking helper, Ms Reidy- Crofts and Mr Josh Power who are coming to provide the expertise needed for the many water-based activities. A huge thank you to Mrs Sinagra and the office staff for the work they have done behind the scenes to help with tour organisation.
Other good things continue to happen at the school. Exam week is looming for Year 10 MESH students and this whilst not a “deal breaker” is a real time reminder of what students can expect in Years 11 & 12. Our role is to assist with preparing students to be the best they can be. A sensitive but timely talk by Warratah today helped inform students about the rights and responsibilities of respectful relationships – something that is very much a focus in the lives of young adults. This knowledge is something for students to reflect on as they progress to adulthood.
I would like to draw your attention to the session on Vaping that MSHS is providing for parents next week. I cannot stress the importance of this information and would encourage you to attend. Please be aware of what is in your child’s bag and in their room. This is an issue for everyone to be very aware of and it will take us all to be sending the same message - “Vaping is NOT Ok”
Warm regards
Mrs C A Thorsby
Principal
