Welcome to Term 2.
Our term started for staff with the opportunity to meet with other teachers from across our district at Manjimup Senior High School. Staff from Northcliffe, Pemberton, Manjimup, Nannup, Boyup Brook and Balingup all met on 15th April to hear from an international expert on Autism, (Chris Bonello), discuss areas of interest with each other and form some collegiate networks, and work together to compare student work samples against the SCSA (School Curriculum and Standards Authority) Judging Standards. The day was a success with staff reporting that they had made some very useful connections during the day and benefited from being able to participate in the sessions.
This week, our Student Forum leaders were invited to attend a session at the Bridgetown-Greenbushes Shire Council chambers. They met with Shire President Jenny Mountford and Councillors Rebecca Redman, Tracy Landsdell and Mike Fletcher, who provided us with a delicious lunch, and talked about the role of Council and what Councillors actually do. The students listened attentively and asked some great questions. Our students then presented a report on the Student Forum to the Councillors and fielded questions from them. The Student Forum were a credit to our school and conducted themselves in an exemplary manner, showing maturity beyond their years. The success of this occasion has led to this being a once a term event on our school calendar and gives our students a “voice” in the wider community. Many thanks to Crs Lansdell and Fletcher for organising this most worthwhile initiative.
Bridgetown High School students were again a credit to us during yesterday’s ANZAC Service. The SES Cadet unit participated in the march and assisted during the service by managing the flags and assisting with the wreath laying. Alex McGuire did a wonderful job of being the drummer during the march – a most important job. Bailee Pettit and Linden Hyde gave the formal address to the assembled crowd and laid a wreath on behalf of the school. They spoke confidently on the theme this year, being the 25th Anniversary of the Australian troops being sent to East Timor as a part of the INTERFET (International Force east Timor) in September 1999. Thank you to all our students who represented our school with such pride and maturity.
The School Council held an AGM and open meeting on Tuesday night. It was a pleasure to welcome some new members to the Council: Wally Hamilton, Kathleen Holdsworth, Tracy Gibb, Lorraine Cave and Kate Henderson. Returning members are Tammy Beswick (Chairperson), Ian McGuire, Craig Goulder, Jodi Dagg and Moira Tough. All members are willing to listen and present a point of view if you have something you would like Council to talk about, and meets once per term.
Until next time,
Kind regards
Mrs C. A Thorsby
