Whole School Surveys
These were conducted with staff, students and parents during Term 2. Thanks to the parents who responded. The survey is still open if parents would still like to complete it. It will stay open until the end of the holiday break.
Curriculum Expertise
BHS is partnering with Cape Naturaliste College for curriculum expertise – Head of Learning Areas are visiting and meeting with our learning area teams and providing useful guidance.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) focus
The focus for Weeks 6, 7 & 8 has been on Kindness – specifically, impact on others when moving around the school.
Learning Support Centre upgrade
Students with additional needs will have a new space soon, dedicated to them, and available all day every day. The space they have recently been allocated is substantially larger than the previous Sensory Room. The new space will allow the Learning Support team to provide even more support. The space will have three specific zones – calming, energizing and focus – to meet the varying needs of our students. The larger space will also accommodate small group sessions and visits from therapists. While the new space is being set up, there will be a small break in the availability of some items, such as the boxing bag and swinging chair. We apologise for the inconvenience of this, but we believe the improvements offered will be worth the wait.

Course Counselling:
- Staff from Manjimup SHS held a meeting at BHS with students and parents on Monday 26th This was followed up with course counselling and support with enrolment processes.

Year 6 Transition
The BHS team have created a transition timeline and are liaising with the feeder primary schools to make sure this works for everyone. I have been visiting a few of the schools this week and taking some student ambassadors with me, to talk to the Year 6 students and parents. There will be a detailed handover of student information from the primary schools to BHS staff in Term 3. Parents are encouraged to arrange an appointment to meet with staff and tour the school.
ADF visit
Staff from the ADF came into the school and spoke to a group of interested students about careers in the ADF.
Live and Deadly
A cultural and comedic performance by Sean Choolburra – for the whole school. This was funded by a cultural grant from Talison.
Inflatable Fun
On Friday 13th June, our year 9/10 Outdoor Recreation students were treated to Inflatable Fun by Mike Cornish. A well-deserved treat for all their hard work so far this year. They had a lot of fun!
Students participated in an inter-school netball carnival to assist in their preparations for Country Week.
Our Yr 9s & 10s will be supporting this by umpiring and coaching the younger students.
Visiting Author/Scientist Cristy Burne – incursion for Year 7 & 8 students in Week 9.
Cristy is an award-winning internationally published author working on the intersection of story, science, technology and creativity. Cristy has worked at CERN (home of the Large Hadron Collider!), at Questacon (as part of a science circus!), and has exploded sewage on her neighbour (by accident).
Cristy’s books have been shortlisted for the WA Premier’s Book Awards and the Wilderness Society’s Environment Award, won the WA Young Readers Book Award, and been recognised as Notable by the Children’s Book Council of Australia.
Cristy is passionate about science, creativity and adventure.
Career Conversations
A useful information session for parents and young people will be happening at BHS in Week 9.
PBS Reward Day
This term the PBS team is using a clubs idea. Students can choose a range of activities around various hobbies or interests. This has been well–supported by community members. Thank you to the P&C who provide funds for the lunch and other materials used for these reward days.
Kelly Anderson
Farwell to Home Economics Teacher, Cheryl Shaw
We would like to acknowledge the great contribution Mrs Shaw has made to BHS as our Technologies teacher for Food and Textiles. Mrs Shaw has engaged students across Years 7 to 10 in challenging and fun projects that have increased their knowledge and skills in cooking. She has encouraged and supported students to try new things and take risks and step out of their comfort zones. Mrs Shaw is retiring at the end of Term 2. Her expertise and her rapport with students will be greatly missed. Thank you Mrs Shaw and we wish you all the best for your retirement.
