From the Principal
We welcomed students back to Term 4 after a very hectic Term 3, which concluded with Country Week for over a third of BHS’ students. This was an excellent event for all involved and I want to thank, once again, everyone who helped make it happen. Can you believe we have already had multiple events since the start of this term? I think it is going to be busy here right up until the final day. It has been lovely to see the sun coming out a little more often. Remind your young people to protect themselves from the sun and carry water with them as the weather warms up.
Here are some of the highlights from the first couple of weeks at BHS:
Mystery Tour of Life
As featured on ABC news last week, our Year 10 students participated in the Mystery Tour of Life, which takes them through a simulation of a fatal car crash. This program has been running for over 20 years and aims to reduce the instances of road trauma, especially among young people. I want to extend my appreciation to the various emergency services, hospital staff, parent volunteers and agencies involved in providing this learning experience for students. It is a powerful and important message about the fragility of life.
Illuminate Business Challenge at Cape Naturaliste College
Year 8, 9 and 10 students from our extension HASS group, the Copernicus Club, participated in the Illuminate Challenge last week at Cape Naturaliste College. They were joined there by students from a few other schools in the region.
Athletics Carnival
At the end of last week, the whole school went to the sportsground to compete in the athletics carnival. Sadly, the weather wasn’t kind to our planning, with the sunshine only lasting until about 10.30am before the heavens opened up and dumped a heap of water onto participants. Students didn’t let it get them down, though, and it was awesome to see their resilience throughout the day as they completed their attempts in various races, discus, shotput, javelin and novelty events. Special thanks to the P&C for the yummy lunches on the day. Some highlights included a tug of war between the students team versus parents and the local police! Little did the students know that this was simply a distraction for the main entertainment of the day, a race by staff who were wearing various inflatable costumes. I admit that I deliberately chose a snail for my costume, as I am NOT a runner.
It was a fabulous day despite the rain, and Fire were the victorious champions!
Manea Graduation – ex-BHS students shine!
Harry Wilson topped Maths Specialist, Maths Methods and Physics.
Meg Stewart-Crump topped Psychology, Human Biology and Chemistry and received the School Board Award.
Eva Henderson-Mott did her School Captain speech and received the ADF Long Tan award for Leadership and Team work.
Year 11s Linden, Isaac, Ben and Noah played in their school band and then performed as The Floorboards before the Graduation.
Coming Up:
World Teachers’ Day 31 October
WA teachers will be acknowledged on the 31st October. Our teachers will have a special morning tea and some other moments of appreciation organised by our student leaders.
OLNA for Year 9s
As this goes to press, Year 9 students will be commencing their OLNA testing. OLNA is a standard literacy and numeracy testing process that students have the opportunity to sit up until the end of Year 12. If students pass their Writing, Reading and Numeracy tests this year, they won’t have to do them again. I wish our Year 9 students all the best for the testing.
WSHS Netball Visit
In Week 5 BHS is expecting visitors from Warwick Senior High School. Students from WSHS will be coming to play some games of netball against our students. I am sure our students will make them feel welcome and I hope they enjoy their time in Bridgetown.
Year 6 Orientation Day Thursday 27 November
The Year 6 students from our various feeder primary schools who are enrolling at BHS in 2026 will be attending another Orientation Day on the 27th of November. There will a range of fun activities, more getting to know each other and the staff, and a yummy sausage sizzle for lunch (courtesy of BYA). We would also like to welcome Year 6 parents to an afternoon tea and tour of the school as well as brief information session from 3:15pm in the school Library.
Presentation Ceremony (and Year 10 students’ final day) Wednesday 17 December
Stay tuned for information about this final and very important event on our school calendar.
