From the Principal, Carol Thorsby
As the cold weather is upon us I would like to acknowledge the efforts of our P & C who, at the end of last year provided a substantial portion of the funding to install reverse cycle air-conditioning in the Student Common Room. It is so much warmer in that area and it is great to see students enjoying being able to congregate in a warmer space before school and at recess. The P & C is such a wonderful support for our school and is open to all parents. This is a fine example of the support they provide so consider coming along and lending a hand at their next fundraiser. I would also like to encourage families to pay the Voluntary Contribution for the P & C that appears on their students’ fees and charges statement. This $20 contribution is important revenue for the P & C and the air-conditioning is proof of the benefits that can be provided for all.
Year 9 and 10 students will shortly be selecting their elective subjects for next semester. Again, a reminder to parents that elective subjects attract a fee that needs to be paid to offset the high cost of some of these subjects. If you have not been in touch with Camille Sinagra to make a payment plan or pay these fees, I encourage you to do so. Non-payment of these fees may result in students having a restricted choice of subjects next semester, and may also mean that your student may not be invited to events such as Country Week and the Broome Tour. Camille is always happy for parents to pay off fees via a small, weekly amount.
As an inclusive school, those of us at Bridgetown High School acknowledge National Reconciliation Week. This week is the perfect opportunity to recognise the traditional owners of the land, and the unique place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture within this country and within our community.
I am always appreciative of community members or businesses that are able to support the school in any way. Kevin Tay, our local Pharmacist, recently met with myself and Mrs Hardey to offer support to the school as a local professional and business. Kevin has generously offered to be a great resource by volunteering his time to come to the school and provide classes with information about a number of relevant topics such as vaccinations and responsible use of prescription medication. Kevin has also offered to be a part of Science Week and to host a Work Placement student later this year. Kevin has undertaken this service as a part of the Amcal Community Spirit program which aims to give back to local communities. Many thanks to Kevin and his staff.
We are always open to feedback, both positive and negative. We acknowledge that we may not “always get it right” but unless we have this feedback, it makes it difficult to change. Our website and new Parent Handbooks will shortly be updated to contain information about how to make a complaint. Please access this information when and if you need to – we are only a phone call away.
Kind regards
Mrs Thorsby
